Is “Mama Bear” trademarked?

This page is informational only and is not legal advice. Trademark status can change; confirm with the USPTO or a trademark attorney.

The short answer

There are live registrations, but they are logos, not plain-text word marks. A class 25 registration (Reg. No. 7215660, registered Nov. 14, 2023) covers the stylized words "Mama Bear" with a walking-bear and heart design, for T-shirts, hooded sweatshirts, dresses, yoga wear and more. In that registration the words "MAMA BEAR" are disclaimed: the owner claims no exclusive rights in the wording by itself, apart from the design. Amazon Technologies, Inc. holds two live bear-head logo registrations with the words "mama bear" for baby products. A logo registration protects the mark as shown. Whether plain-text "Mama Bear" on a shirt could still draw a complaint is a fact-specific question for a trademark attorney.

Mark type matters. A standard-character mark covers the wording itself, in any font or style. A stylized or design (logo) mark is registered as shown, and how far it reaches to the same words in plain text is fact-specific. A trademark attorney can tell you how it applies to your design. USPTO mark descriptions:
Serial 90556653: The mark consists of a stylized representation of the wording " Mama Bear", featuring a fanciful walking bear design above and a heart shape on the left hand side. Disclaimer: no claim is made to the exclusive right to use "MAMA BEAR" apart from the mark as shown.
Serial 88030564: The mark consists of a stylized bear's head in front of a smaller stylized bear's head, below the larger bear's head are the stylized words "mama bear".
Serial 87037833: The mark consists of a stylized bear's head in front of a smaller stylized bear's head, below the larger bear's head are the stylized words "mama bear".

About this check. This page lists only the 3 USPTO records shown above. We picked them from a limited sample of search results (the top 100 results per phrase search, when a common phrase can have thousands of related filings) and verified each one on its USPTO TSDR status page. Other filings, live or dead, may exist. Where this page says "none," it means none in the records we checked.

What it means for your products

Shirts and apparel (class 25). The registered goods read like a POD catalog: short- or long-sleeved T-shirts, hooded sweatshirts, sweatsuits and yoga tops. The owner of record is Quanzhou Zhongteng Network Technology Co., Ltd. The registration is for the bear-and-heart logo, and the wording itself is disclaimed. That narrows what the words alone protect. But a design that looks like the registered logo would sit very close to it, and marketplaces can act on any complaint that cites a live registration.

Mugs and drinkware (class 21). Amazon's Reg. No. 6396778 is a bear-head logo with the words "mama bear" covering baby drinking cups and training cups, not adult coffee mugs. Class 21 overlap can still lead to complaints.

Stickers and paper (class 16). Amazon's class 16 registration (the same bear-head logo) is for diaper-pail liners and plastic bags for disposable diapers, which is a long way from stickers. None of the records we checked covers stickers.

Other filings. This page covers only the three records in the table. Other MAMA BEAR filings, live or dead, may exist.

Variants are starting points, not clearances. Any new wording can match a record we didn't list or a filing made after our check. Run every final phrase through a search before you list it.
