Is “Squad Goals” trademarked?

The short answer

Yes, for clothing. Shequeta L. Smith owns a live registration for SQUAD GOALS in class 25 (Reg. No. 7523403, registered Oct. 1, 2024), covering T-shirts, graphic T-shirts, hooded sweatshirts, tank tops, hats, leggings and more. An earlier SQUAD GOALS clothing registration owned by someone else was cancelled in January 2024.

Goods text is quoted from the USPTO record and shortened where marked “…”. Classes listed are international classes. A dash (—) means no registration has issued.

Mark type matters. A standard-character mark covers the wording itself, in any font or style. A stylized or design (logo) mark is registered as shown, and how far it reaches to the same words in plain text is fact-specific. A trademark attorney can tell you how it applies to your design.

About this check. This page lists only the 2 USPTO records shown above. We picked them from a limited sample of search results (the top 100 results per phrase search, when a common phrase can have thousands of related filings) and verified each one on its USPTO TSDR status page. Other filings, live or dead, may exist. Where this page says "none," it means none in the records we checked.

What it means for your products

Shirts and apparel (class 25). The live registration lists graphic T-shirts by name, along with hooded sweatshirts, tank tops, dresses, socks and swimsuits. That's direct overlap with POD apparel.

The cancelled registration. Dawn Hernandez registered SQUAD GOALS for shirts and hooded sweatshirts in 2017 (Reg. No. 5226373). It was cancelled on Jan. 5, 2024, for a missing Section 8 declaration. Four days later, on Jan. 9, 2024, a different person applied for the same phrase for clothing. That application registered in October 2024.

This is the pattern to watch for. A phrase being "dead" one year doesn't mean it stays open. Squad Goals went from cancelled to re-filed within days and registered within a year.

Mugs, stickers, bags. None in the records we checked for other merch classes.

Variant ideas (not guaranteed to be clear)

Variants are starting points, not clearances. Any new wording can match a record we didn't list or a filing made after our check. Run every final phrase through a search before you list it.
